PANCHGANI: Journalists from the electronic and print media, who were camping at Panchgani to cover the wedding reception of Bollywood star Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, were manhandled by overzealous private security personnel near the Il Palazzo hotel in the afternoon here on Thursday. At least six journalists, including some female reporters, were pushed and shoved by around 15 securitymen.
Camera of a private television channel fell down in the process.
The local police deputed on the spot chose to watch the proceedings mutely and refused to intervene and stop the scuffle. A group of four securitymen from a private agency of actor Ronit Roy (Mihir Virani of Kyonkisaas bhi... fame) were standing guard at the beginning of the lane leading to Il Palazzo hotel. They were not allowing anybody to go in the lane though the gate of Il Palazzo was some distance away from the spot. The 25 member media contingent requested the security people to allow them to go up to the gate of Il Palazzo at 2.15 pm and told them that they would not go inside......Tempers ran high when the security personnel refused the request. A team of seven to eight securitymen came running from inside the hotel and pushed the journalists back. Pandemonium broke lose after that. The securitymen reportedly abused and threatened the journalists saying, "Tum bahar milo hum dekhte hai kisme dum hai. (See me outside we will see who is stronger)." Some local residents also gathered at the spot complaining that people whose homes were situated in the same lane (after the hotel) were also stopped from entering the lane. They pointed out that the lane belonged to the local civic body and not to the hotel and demanded that the security guards show them a letter from the civic body authorising them to block it......After the scuffle, actor Ronit Roy himself came out to pacify the mediapersons, who by then were in no mood to listen. Assistant police inspector Sitaram More, who was on bandobast duty also tried to cool down tempers but the journalists were already annoyed by police inaction.
